Tripura Violence: Action against 3 Officers Who Didn’t Act in Time; ECI Deputes Special Observers to Up Vigilance

Hours after the announcement of the dates for the assembly elections in Tripura on Wednesday, political tussle started. On Thursday, the ECI asked the Chief Electoral Officer of the state to obtain a report from the DGP about the incident

In the wake of political violence in Tripura on Wednesday… Election commission of India (ECI) on Friday initiated action against three officials in the state. The election body has also appointed three special observers to take stock of the situation and intensify enforcement measures in the state.

In a statement, the election body said that the Chief Secretary (CS) and Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura had been directed to ensure level playing field for all political parties and initiate strict action against biased officers.

The Election Commission has directed the CS and DGP to take strict action against the three officials for not taking appropriate action on time. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jirania has been suspended with immediate effect. Two more officers Rani Bazar police station in-charge and Jirania police station in-charge have also been removed with immediate effect.

Hours after the announcement of the dates for the assembly elections in Tripura on Wednesday, political tussle started. On Thursday, the ECI asked the Chief Electoral Officer of the state to obtain a report from the DGP about the incident. This report was to be submitted by 3 pm on Friday.

The ECI had announced on Wednesday that polling in the northeastern state would be held on February 16, while the counting of votes would take place on March 2.

Blame

The Congress alleged that 15 party workers and office-bearers, including AICC general secretary Ajoy Kumar, were injured in an attack by a group of “Bharatiya Janata Party-backed goons” during a bike rally in Tripura’s Majlishpur constituency. Police, however, said the attacks were carried out by unidentified miscreants in West Tripura district, and “10 party workers were injured”.

In its report, the ECI said that inputs from the state government have confirmed that Kumar suffered minor injuries in an illegal rally as the incident took place in an area where permission was not given by the district authorities. It also said that “it is not true that he suffered serious injuries.”

Three special observers have been asked to visit the state immediately to take stock of the situation, ensure proper deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), intensify enforcement measures and report back to the commission. They are: 1985 batch IAS Yogendra Tripathi; Vivek Johri, a 1984-batch IPS and 1983-batch IRS B. Murali Kumar.

“The Commission expressed its displeasure in no uncertain terms and in strong words over the violent incident during and after the visit to the State, despite strict instructions from the Commission,” the statement said.

Further, in Friday’s order, the ECI has asked the CS and DGP to immediately assess the threat perception to the leaders of various political parties in the state and provide security without any delay as per the threat perception.

“The Chief Electoral Officer, Tripura was directed to facilitate the District Electoral Officers to grant permission to political parties on first-come-first-served basis and to process applications of political parties for meetings, rallies and roadshows. Popularize the Suvidha App.” Told.

Two other northeastern states, Meghalaya and Nagaland, will also go to polls next month on February 27. The counting of votes in all these states will take place on March 2. The term of these three assemblies with 60 seats will expire. on 12, 15 and 22 March respectively.
