Tripura Assembly Polls: BJP Releases List of 48 Candidates; CM Manik Saha to Contest From Town Bordowali

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday released its first list of 48 candidates for the 60-member Tripura Assembly, elections for which will be held next month. The party said that the names of the remaining 12 candidates will be announced later. Senior BJP leaders Anil Baluni and Sambit Patra released the list during a press conference at the party headquarters here.

The party has fielded Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik from Dhanpur in its first list, and named state Chief Minister Manik Saha as the BJP candidate from Town Bordovali.

Bhowmik is a Union minister in the BJP-led government at the Centre. He is an MP from Tripura. In the last assembly elections of 2018, BJP formed the government for some time in Tripura, which is considered to be a stronghold of the Left. The CPI(M) had ruled the state unabated for 25 years.

The BJP’s top leadership was in talks for a pre-poll alliance with TIPRA, a regional party founded by former Congress leader and royal scion Pradyot Deb Burman, which has now been ruled out. The CPI(M) is contesting the state elections in alliance with the Congress this time.

Meanwhile, the Congress has also announced a list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Tripura Assembly elections. As per the Congress list, Sudip Roy Barman will contest from Agartala.
