‘Tripathi didn’t let us compromise’: Shreyas Iyer ‘groove’ after 7-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad

Kolkata Knight Riders put on a 175-run stand on Friday night in the hopes that it would be enough to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. But hardly he knew about the plan to chase down Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram. The duo put on a remarkable 94-run partnership for the third wicket to lay the foundation for Sunrisers’ third consecutive win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Tripathi and Markram came together after Sunrisers lost their first two wickets for 39 runs. The former KKR batsman scored 74 runs including 4 fours and 6 sixes, while Markram remained undefeated on 68 off 36 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes as SRH secured the victory with 13 balls to spare. He made calculative strikes, hit big sixes and kept the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers on tenterhooks with his scintillating hitting.

Their collective efforts tarnished the brilliant innings played by Nitish Rana in the previous innings. The KKR batsman came to the rescue as the team was reduced to 31/3 in the fifth over. He played a well controlled innings of 54 runs in 36 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes.

After the loss, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that Tripathi did not give the bowlers a single chance to take control. Talking with the broadcasters, the former said that the unit put up a great batting performance but it turned out to be a bad day for them.

“Feeling very tired. I thought it was a good total. To be honest, Tripathi came and changed the moment and didn’t let us settle down. His bowlers executed the stuff well as the ball was seaming. Given. As batsmen, we settled at the end of the powerplay and put in a good effort as a batting unit. Had an off day as a bowling unit,” Iyer said.

Sunrisers will face Punjab Kings on Sunday at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne Stadium on Monday.
