Tribal professor harassed by colleague, accused arrested

A female teacher at Sabang College in West Bengal was allegedly verbally harassed by a colleague. The male professor, identified as Nirmal Bera, who teaches Bengali in the same college, was allegedly making derogatory remarks towards a female teacher belonging to the tribal community.

The matter was reported by the teacher to the authorities. This incident happened on December 19. Soon after the complaint, Bharat Jakat Manjhi Pargana Mahal, a social, non-political organization working for the tribals, had gheraoed the college premises and demanded action against the accused. Protests for weeks against harassment of teachers at their workplace.

She was finding it difficult to attend college for the past few days, the teacher complained. Papiya Mandi of Sajnikanto Mahavidyalaya stood up on their issue and complained to the police. After the constant protest of the social worker, the police arrested the accused professor.

The case has caught the attention of all sections of the society considering the accused as an educated and a teacher. Many activists have expressed their concern on this matter.

“Such incidents are not acceptable. We have to change ourselves. Schools should sensitize students to gender, race-based prejudices and educate children to prevent such things from happening,” said author Sangeeta Banerjee.

Scholar Nrisinh Prasad Bhaduri said, “These are educated people, why are they doing this? If such things happen in educational institutions then they should be punished.”
