PATNA: The time has come for the third gender to wear the police uniform and make a formal entry into the police force. The state government has given its approval for the recruitment of those transgenders who have been added to the Schedule (2) list of the Backward Classes and their appointment will be made under the reserved category.
Transgenders will be appointed as constables and sub-inspectors as per the decision of the state government. The notification issued by the General Administration Department states that one transgender will be appointed for each of the 500 posts of sub-inspector and constable. Recruitment will improve police-public relations at the national level.
Chief Secretary Amir Subhani presided over a meeting on Saturday in which a decision was taken on the recruitment of third gender members in the police force. The decision comes in the backdrop of a 2014 proposal of the General Administration Department. Additional Chief Secretary Chaitanya Prasadhome department secretary Senthil Kumar and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
Initially, the state government will recruit 41 constables and 10 sub-inspectors from the transgender community. People from the transgender community, who wish to serve the Bihar Police, must submit a certificate confirming their gender and residential certificate to show that they are a native of Bihar. The standard of physical eligibility test for the third gender will be the same as for the recruitment of women.
With this decision, there is a wave of happiness for the transgenders, who will not only get their means of livelihood but will also get a respectable job which comes with great responsibility. Muskan Kumari (32) welcomed the decision of the State Government and said that it would help in improving their status in the society. Another transgender, Adika Choudhary said, “Since we have gone through many struggles, we know how to deal with situations. If given a chance, we will try our best to maintain law and order in the state.”
Riya Choudhary, a transgender said, “Now we will get a proper platform to prove our worth. I am sure that we will live up to the expectations of the Police Department and will perform our duties diligently.
