A small training plane carrying three people crashed north of the capital Beirut in Lebanon’s mountainous Kesarwan district on Thursday, the country’s aviation authority said.

Aviation sources said initial reports said that the pilot and two passengers were killed.

The aviation authority said in a statement that the Cessna 172 aircraft belonged to the flight training firm Open Sky Aviation and took off from Beirut airport at 1.30 pm local time before crashing in the village of Ghosta 20 minutes later.

Open Sky could not immediately be reached for comment.

The authority said that the Public Works and Transport Minister had constituted a committee to investigate.

“There was a lot of fog in the area… the plane hit rocks over a house,” said local resident Ziad Malouf. “After hearing the explosion we ran outside and we saw the remains of the rubble. People.”
