Tourism picks up in Kerala after the pandemic, 72.48 percent jump in domestic travelers in the first quarter of 2022

The state government has said that the tourism sector in Kerala is back on track after being stricken by the Kovid epidemic.

State Tourism Minister PA Muhammad Riyas said Kerala attracted 3.8 million domestic tourists and registered a growth of 72.48 per cent in the first quarter of 2022, as compared to 2.2 million footfalls in the same period in 2021.

Ernakulam district saw the maximum number of domestic tourists (811,426), followed by Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Thrissur and Wayanad. The minister said that the remarkable growth of 16 lakh tourists in the first month of the current year shows that Kerala tourism has recovered from the impact of the pandemic.

Riyas also said that there is a problem in the maintenance of tourist centers. To solve this problem, the state government is planning to start a tourism club in each college. The tourism centers will be maintained and marketed by the students. This project will be implemented across the state in collaboration with the Higher Education Department.

With regard to foreign tourist arrivals, this number increased from 14,489 in the first quarter of 2021 to 43,547 during the same period of the current year. Tourists from abroad were mainly concentrated in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts.

The Minister also said that the positive growth is the result of 360-degree marketing campaign conducted by Kerala Tourism from October to December 2021. The campaign, which made careful use of all available media to engage with tourists, projected the state as a safe destination. Diverse experiences for domestic and foreign visitors. Kerala also made its mark at the Travel and Tourism Fair in Ahmedabad, which highlighted the central theme “A Change of Air”.

Kerala Tourism also organized the first business-to-business meet in the European cities of Madrid and Milan, besides Muscat and Manama in West Asia.

The tourism department has also launched a WhatsApp chatbot “Maya”, which is a virtual tour guide.
