Tourism is not the biggest contributor to the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, know what it is

Agriculture is the largest economic sector in India. A large part of the Indian population is dependent on agriculture in the country and it plays an important role in increasing the GDP.

While Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh constitute a major part of agriculture in northern India, there are other regions in the Hindi belt whose economy mostly depends on agriculture. One such state is Jammu and Kashmir.

When we talk about Jammu and Kashmir, we often associate it with tourism. However, 70 per cent of the state’s population is directly or indirectly engaged in agriculture, as reported by Krishi Jagran. The Kashmir Valley is rich in horticulture and sericulture making it the richest part of the state. The state is home to fruit, vegetable and nut plantations. Due to the cool weather and good soil quality, it best offers apples, cherries, peaches, pears and cereals such as rice and barley. Kashmiri almonds are popular all over the world. Most domestic crops, fruits and vegetables are exported nationally and internationally.

One of the most famous and expensive products of clothing, pashmina is also manufactured in the state. Pashmina is used to make shawls and suits. It is light yet warm. High quality pashmina is available in the market for thousand rupees for a meter. It is also exported across borders. Jammu and Kashmir is also famous for its carpets and handicrafts. Considering the large share of agriculture in the state, the government is planning to give better returns to the farmers to give a further boost to agriculture. The government is planning to expand the existing custom hiring sector and agricultural machinery banks in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir is also the largest producer of saffron in India. Last year, the Indian government introduced new techniques of GI tagging and processing in the state to improve the quality of saffron and make it among the top in the world. A saffron park was also established for this.

With the right investments and more initiatives, Kashmir can become a hub of agriculture in the near future.
