An American gymnast and a Czech beach volleyball player were on Tuesday added to the tally of people accredited for the Tokyo Olympics who have tested positive for COVID-19 this month.

Tokyo Olympic organizers said 71 people have now tested positive. A total of 31 people are among the thousands of international visitors expected in Japan to compete or work at the Games that opened on Friday.

Positive tests for United States gymnastics alternate Kara Ecker and Czech team member Ondrej Perusic were announced on Monday. Eker was in a training camp in Chiba Prefecture and Perusic stayed at the Olympic Village in Tokyo Bay.

Both went into 14-day quarantine, the organizers said. That period includes all three of Perusic’s scheduled games, with teammate David Schweiner playing.

One of the 13 new cases officially added on Tuesday involved a “sports-related worker” – a category including team officials and sports staff – in Tokyo who is not living in the village.

Other new cases scattered across Japan include sports contractors and a volunteer.
