Toshiba halts operations at chip plant after earthquake

(Reuters) – Toshiba Corp said on Monday it had suspended operations at a plant in Oita, southern Japan, that makes semiconductors used in cars and industrial machinery after a strong earthquake struck the region over the weekend.

Toshiba said in a statement that some equipment has been damaged and the company is still analyzing the impact on production.

A spokesman for Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corp said the plant makes Systems LSI chips, about 60% of which are sold to carmakers and industrial machinery makers.

He said Toshiba does not yet know when it might resume production and will likely provide an update on Tuesday.

The company also manufactures System LSI chips at a factory in northern Japan, with other domestic producers, such as Renesas Electronics, also manufacturing the devices.
