My teenage daughter is extremely concerned about the development of her breasts. She has been feeling very embarrassed and self-conscious ever since she started wearing bras. It also bothers her that compared to some of her friends, her breasts are not growing in proportion and she also feels that they are uneven. Can she do some exercises to increase the size of her breasts?”

This question will sound familiar to many mothers who have teenage daughters. I thought I would address this to reassure all such mothers and their daughters.

Some girls’ breasts grow slowly, while some girls grow more rapidly. Usually, it takes about four years for the breasts to fully develop; However, in some girls, they can be fully grown in less than a year; Compared to many others that may take five or six years to fully develop. These are all ‘variations of the ordinary’, and one need not worry too much about the pace of their development. It’s only necessary to have a little patience, if they are taking a little longer to grow.

As seen with all parts of our body, breasts can also vary in their size and shape. The final size and shape of a girl’s breasts is essentially controlled by ‘genetic traits’ inherited from her parents. In fact, there is virtually nothing one can do about the way breasts appear. Basically no physical exercise can increase or decrease breast size. Exercise can only build muscle, and breasts do not have muscles. They mainly consist of fatty tissue.

In fact, no two breasts are the same size and shape. They all grow unevenly. It’s hard to find a woman who has both breasts exactly the same size and shape; However, even this disparity is not noticeable. It is also necessary to know that despite their size, they are large enough to feed all babies.

The size of the nipples can also vary widely. In some women, the nipples turn inward rather than protrude, and may even protrude into the areola, known as ‘inverted nipples’.

Some girls feel awkward and embarrassed about their growing breasts, because none of their friends of their age have started developing breasts. Sometimes they lose their upright posture and start sinking into their chest. As they get older, most girls get comfortable with their breasts and see it as a sign of maturity.

Instilling the right values in growing girls is so essential that one does not need to link one’s self-esteem to breast size, as we are all distinctly different in our physical characteristics and even other aspects of our personality.
