The sports fraternity and the country’s political establishment lauded the stupendous success of Indian badminton players at the Tokyo Paralympics, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze.

The sports fraternity and the country’s political establishment lauded the stupendous success of Indian badminton players at the Tokyo Paralympics, where Krishna Nagar and Suhas Yathiraj won a gold and a silver respectively on the closing day of the Games. India finished 24th in the final medal tally by winning five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals. The shuttlers contributed four medals – 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. “Historical performance by Krishna Nagar. Strong and determined, you proved your mettle by winning a gold medal in badminton at the Paralympics and holding the tricolor high. Your excellence is commendable. Many Indians will be inspired by you. Congratulations and best wishes,” tweeted President Ram Nath Kovind.

“Congratulations to Suhas Yathiraj who gave tough competition to the #1 world and won a silver medal in badminton at the #Paralympics. Your dedication in carrying forward the sport while discharging your duties as a civil servant is extraordinary. Best wishes for a future full of achievements.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he is happy to see the country’s badminton players excel at the Tokyo Paralympics. Congratulations to them. To win the gold medal. Best wishes to them for their further endeavours. #Praise4Para,” Modi tweeted. “Great amalgamation of service and sports! @dmgbnagarSuhasYatiraj has captured the imagination of our entire nation with his exceptional sporting performance. Congratulations to him on winning a silver medal in badminton. His future Best wishes to him for his efforts,” he wrote about Suhas, the district magistrate of Noida.

Shooter Abhinav Bindra, India’s first Olympic individual gold medalist, tweeted: “Krishna Nagar gets India’s 2nd Badminton Gold at the #Tokyo2020 Paralympics after a brilliant match in the SH6 final! Play like a true champion and fight through tough situations! Many congratulations #Praise4Para. “Silver for Suhas Yathiraj! Exceptional performance by an IAS officer to almost beat the world No. 1 in Men’s Singles Badminton SL4. The #Tokyo2020 Paralympics exemplifies the faith of our para athletes. Many congratulations! #Praise4Para.” Former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha praised Nagar for his “brave effort”.
