Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu feels ‘really inspired’ after meeting Sachin Tendulkar

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu created history by becoming the first weightlifter of the recently concluded country to win a silver medal. Tokyo Olympics. The Manipuri star was given a rousing welcome by airport staff, fellow passengers and the crowd at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport last month.

After his historic performance and spending some quality time with family and friends in Manipur, Chanu met cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar at his home in Mumbai. The ace weightlifter took to Instagram to share a few pictures with Tendulkar.

“It was great meeting Sachin Tendulkar this morning. His words of wisdom and inspiration will always be with me. Really inspired,” the 27-year-old captioned the images from his meeting with the batting maestro. Photos showed Tendulkar praising the silver medal won by the lifter. The Indian cricket legend also presented him with a bouquet of flowers.

Tendulkar took to social media to show their mutual admiration for each other and how much it was a pleasure to meet Chanu at his residence.

“Mirabai Chanu can lift spirits as easily as she lifts! It was wonderful spending time with you. You are a champion whose journey can inspire many more champions! Keep growing in your life and career!” Legend captioned on Instagram.

Chanu is the second Indian woman after Karnam Malleswari to win a medal in weightlifting. Malleswari won the bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney edition.

Two decades later, Chanu opened the country’s Tokyo Olympics account with a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category. She won the silver medal by lifting a total of 202 kg (87 kg + 115 kg). In the process, she became the first Indian to win a medal for the country on the first day of the quadrennial event.

She performed exceptionally, however, that was not enough for her to claim the gold medal as China’s Hou Zhihui finished first, while Indonesia’s Windy Aisha won the bronze medal in the same category.
