Tokyo Olympic organizers here on Tuesday announced the first case of a sports volunteer testing positive for COVID-19 along with seven more contractors associated with the event. Five athletes, three of whom are staying in the sports village, have tested positive for the virus as of Monday. The volunteer who returned a positive test is located in Iwate Prefecture. The total number of sports-related COVID infections has risen to 67 with nine more cases being added to the official list. The showpiece will open on July 23 and run through August 8.

Sports volunteers are directly involved in assisting with its operation before, during and after the event. They play an active role in creating excitement among the fans and assisting the athletes in managing the logistics. With seven being added to the list on Tuesday, the total number of infected contractors associated with the Games has gone up to 36.

On Monday, Czech beach volleyball player Ondrej Perucic became the third athlete at the Olympic Games Village to test positive for COVID-19, while an American alternative female gymnast training in Chiba prefecture also became infected.

This comes after South African footballers Thabiso Monae and Kamohello Mahlatsi and video analyst Mario Masha tested positive for the virus on Sunday. The Games will be held behind closed doors amid stringent health safety protocols to ensure that they do not become a super spreader event as is widely feared.
