Tokyo bronze medalist Vivek Sagar Prasad gets DSP job, 10 million cash prize and a house

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday honored Vivek Sagar Prasad, a member of the Tokyo men’s hockey team, with a DSP job, a cash prize of Rs 1 crore and a house. When the media asked Prasad what he would do with the cash prize he received at the event, the 21-year-old, a native of Itarsi in Hoshangabad, innocently said that he would arrange a proper house for his parents.

Years ago, the family of the son of school teacher Rohit Prasad, a native of Bihar, who went to MP in search of work, still lives in a kutcha house in his village and the media had also exposed this.

When the chief minister’s turn came, he announced that his parents would get a job from the state government at a place of their choice. Chouhan also announced the appointment of Deputy Superintendent of Police in Madhya Pradesh Police besides conferring a cash prize of Rs 1 crore to Prasad as announced earlier.

His coach, former technical advisor of MP Hockey Academy, who discovered Prasad’s talent, Ashok Kumar, son of hockey magician Major Dhyan Chand, was also honored at the event. Chouhan announced that former Olympian Shivendra Kumar, a native of MP, who is the assistant coach of the men’s national hockey team, will also get a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh.

Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, a shooter who was also part of the Tokyo Indian contingent, was given a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh to Prachi Yadav, who is on her way to Tokyo to participate in the Paralympics.

Appreciating India’s performance in Tokyo, Chouhan said that it is also the responsibility of the state to promote sports and develop Olympic level athletes. On Tokyo bronze medal in men’s hockey, Chauhan said, “It is not a victory for Indian hockey but a new invention and we need to take the sport to glory.”

Pointing to the introduction of astro-turf in the game, Chauhan claimed, “Our players were not lacking, but the way the game (hockey) had changed in the past, there was a decline in Indian hockey.

Nilakant Sharma, a native of Manipur, part of the men’s hockey team, who trains at the MP Hockey Academy, will later receive his Rs 1 crore cash prize. Chouhan lauded the women’s team for the resilience shown in Tokyo and announced a cash reward of Rs 31 lakh for the team.

Earlier in the day, Prasad landed at the airport where he was given a heroic welcome by sports enthusiasts and Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia.
