India’s B Sai Praneeth suffered a straight game loss to lower-ranked Misha Zilberman of Israel in Group D men’s singles, setting off a disappointing start to her maiden Olympic campaign here on Saturday. Praneeth, the 2019 World Championship bronze medalist and now ranked 15th, was very uncertain as he lost 17-21, 15-21 to world number 47 Zilberman in a 41-minute match.

The 13th seeded Indian will next take on world number 29 Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands. In the opening game, Praneeth initially took an 8-4 lead, but Zilberman soon turned the table with five straight points as the Indian made several unforced errors. The Indian entered the break with a one point advantage after an error from Zilberman. Praneeth reduced his execution, which allowed Zilberman to lead 15-13. The Israeli shuttler dominated the proceedings with a 19-14 zoom as the Indian missed a few shots.
A cross court smash helped Zilberman score six game points and sealed it in the fourth attempt. Zilberman did well with Praneeth sending the first two shuttles for a long time. Israel soon led 8-5. Zilberman continued to set the conditions in the rallies as Praneeth trailed 7-11 at intervals.
Praneeth could not match the pace of his opponent, who was playing at a different level. After Praneeth again went for a long time, Zilberman eventually scored 8 match points and sealed the opening match with a smash.
