An emotional Manjeet Kaur told IANS: “My son loves the ‘aloo ke parathas’ and ‘aloo ki sabzi’ made by me.”

He said that his son has worked really hard to reach the Olympic podium from this small village.

“I spoke to him before the match and wished him all the best,” he said.

“Of course, I told him many times that he should not take the German team lightly,” Kaur said.

Manpreet, who has also played in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, was overjoyed to see her pointing at her brother and two pet dogs – Sam and Rio.

“Though I am in constant touch with him over video calls, I look forward to hugging him with a medallion around his neck,” she said, adding that her son likes to drink a lot of milk.

In the nearby Khusropur village, 22-year-old midfielder Hardik Singh is in the team.

Responding to India’s victory over Germany, Mandeep’s father Ravinder Singh said, “India has won the medal after many years. I am speechless at what India has achieved today.”

After a tremendous victory, Hardik Singh’s car will now have the Olympic logo.

“When he was selected for the Olympics, his younger brother asked him if he could put the Olympic logo on the car. At that point he replied that he would inform her in due course. Now is the time to put a logo on it,” commented Hardik’s mother Kanwaljit Kaur, who has bought a gold ring in the shape of an Olympic ring to gift her son.

Hailing from a family of hockey players, Hardik’s father Varinderpreet Singh is the Superintendent of Police in Punjab Police and his grandfather Pritam Singh was a former coach.

Pritam’s younger brother Gurmel Singh was part of the Indian hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the last medal to come home.

Describing the hockey bronze medal at par with its weight, an excited Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted and congratulated the team: “A tremendous achievement on reaching the podium after 41 years. Hockey bronze is worth its weight in gold.”

Punjab players in the 18-man squad are vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh, Shamsher Singh and Simranjit Singh.

State Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi announced an award of Rs one crore each for 10 sportspersons from the state.

“On this historic day, I am happy to announce a cash prize of Rs 1 crore. We look forward to your return to celebrate the much-deserved medal at the Olympics.”
