On this day in 1921, the Indian National Congress recognized a flag as its unofficial flag. The draft design of this flag was presented to Mahatma Gandhi by the young freedom fighter Pingali Venkaiah in the 1921 session of the Congress in Vijayawada. The flag had red and green colors, representing the two major religions of India.

Pingali went to Gandhiji for the design of the flag, in which he advised to use a white color and spinning wheel in the flag. The white color represented the rest of India’s religions and the charkha swadeshi movement and being self-reliant.

Later the red color was replaced by saffron and white color was also included in it. There was also a change in the design of the wheel of the spinning wheel. This changed flag was recognized by the Congress as the official flag of the party in 1931.

There were many controversies regarding the flag

Before 1931, there was also controversy over linking the colors of the flag with religions. Many people started demanding to add mace instead of spinning wheel in the flag, while others demanded to add another ocher color to the flag. The demand of the Sikhs was that either yellow color should be added to the flag or all kinds of religious symbols should be removed.

To resolve this dispute, in 1931, the Congress Working Committee formed a committee of 7 people. The committee recommended that the flag be made of only one colour. This suggestion of the committee was not accepted. In the same year, the Congress recognized the flag made by Pingali Venkaiah as the official flag of the party.

The first flag in the picture was unofficially recognized by Congress in 1921. The second flag was formally recognized by the Congress in 1931. With the change of Ashoka Chakra instead of spinning wheel in this flag, the national flag of the country became tricolor.

Later this became the tricolor of India

After independence, the Constitution Committee decided to make this flag of Congress with some changes as the flag of India, that is, the tricolor. A major change in this flag was made regarding the spinning wheel. The charkha, which was in the middle of the Congress flag, was replaced by the Ashoka Chakra in the tricolor. This flag was first hoisted officially on 22 July 1947, a few days before the country’s independence.

After independence, India became a secular country. Hence the interpretation of the colors of the flag was changed on the basis of religion. It was said that the colors of this flag have nothing to do with religions. Saffron is considered a symbol of courage and sacrifice, white color is said to symbolize peace and truth, while green color symbolizes prosperity. At the same time, Ashoka Chakra is a symbol of Dharmachakra.

Since then there has been no change in the flag of India. Earlier, Indian citizens were not allowed to hoist the flag at their homes and shops on any day other than the national festival. Changes were made in the Indian Flag Code in 2002 and now every Indian citizen can hoist the flag with respect in his home, shop, factory, office on any day.
