Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stunned viewers of Fox News, where he is currently a contributor, as he lost 40 kilograms in a span of six months. Talking to news agency The New York Post, the man who is considered close to former US President Donald Trump shared how he lost weight and did it all on his own without a trainer.

The former director of the Central Intelligence Agency told the New York Post that he was shocked in June last year when he stepped on the weight scale and saw that he was close to weighing 136 kilograms for the first time in his life. Pompeo said he remembers telling his wife, Susan Pompeo, the next day that he needed to lose weight. “Today is the day,” said Pompeo to his wife.

The West Point graduate bought some dumb bells and got an elliptical machine and invested in a home gym in his basement. Pompeo exercises no more than 30 minutes a day and aims to do so no more than 6-7 times a week. He believes it was nothing scientific and that it was just that. “There was no trainer, no dietitian. It was just me, the New York Post quoted Pompeo as saying.

Pompeo said he started gaining weight when he was elected to Congress from Kansas in 2010. Pompeo also said that losing weight has been a life-long struggle for him and also admitted that he “didn’t fix it and wasn’t disciplined enough” with regards to his health as he carried on with his official duties. .

However, he said that being an Italian American his love for food remains unchanged. Pompeo highlighted that family traditions such as going to the iHop to eat out still persist, but that ‘stacks of pumpkin pancakes shredded in syrup’ have now been replaced with ‘egg whites and turkey bacon’ . Now at family gatherings where cheese, pasta, and desserts are the quintessence of a good, hearty meal, Pompeo says he’s the person who says, “Yeah, I’ll have a salad.”
