TN woman gets 10 years rigorous imprisonment for possessing ganja | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: A special court under the Essential Commodities and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (EC&NDPS) Act in Coimbatore has sentenced a 40-year-old woman to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment for possessing 16 kg of marijuana (ganja) for sale.
The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau -Crime Investigation Department (NIB-CID) arrested Poongothai, wife of Rajan of Palayapalayam in Erode district, when she was carrying 16 kg of ganja on a scooter on September 8, 2020. The NIB-CID police registered a case against Poongothai under sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(2)(B) and 25 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police seized the contraband and scooter from her.
She was lodged in the special prison for women on the Coimbatore Central Prison premises.
The NIB-CID police filed a chargesheet in the special court. Public prosecutor V Sivakumar appeared on behalf of the prosecution.
Judge N Logeswaran pronounced the verdict on Thursday evening. The court found her guilty and sentenced her to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on her.
