TN parents worried as more students and teachers test positive for COVID-19

Chennai: After an academic week of reopening of schools in Tamil Nadu, the number of new COVID-19 cases in educational institutions among students and teachers increased with two students and a teacher testing positive for the virus. . The spike in new cases has raised concerns among parents.

According to a report in The New Indian Express on Sunday, three people, including two students and a teacher, recently tested positive for COVID-19. One of them was a 16-year-old student of a government-aided higher secondary school in Ariyalur and the other was a 19-year-old student of the Kundhavai Nachiyar Government Arts College for Women in Thanjavur. The teacher who tested positive was a Tamil teacher from Nesavalar Colony Municipal High School in Tiruppur. The three men gave the test for COVID-19 on September 1 and their test results reportedly came back positive on Friday.

However, the college student did not attend the college after receiving the test results and the teacher also had symptoms since September 1, according to reports. After this, the Health Department took samples of the primary contacts of the teachers working in Tiruppur through the camp. Health officials have also sent samples of contacts.

With rising COVID-19 cases among students of classes 9-12, parents are scared of the rising infection and are considering opting for online classes.

Nevertheless, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said on Saturday that the positive patients may have contracted the virus before the reopening of educational institutions. However, samples have been collected from other students and teachers and the health department is working on tracing the contacts.

On September 3, three teachers and three students from parts of the state tested positive for COVID-19.
