Sources said that Roy submitted his resignation to Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, however, the reason behind his decision is yet to be known

Sparking fresh political stir in West Bengal, veteran Trinamool Congress leader Tapas Roy submitted his resignation from the party on Monday. He also resigned from the MLA post earlier in the day.

Roy’s resignation came as a surprise to many within the party and the state’s political circles. He was serving as the State Development and Planning Minister in the TMC-led government.

According to sources, Tapas Roy’s resignation was submitted to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, the reason behind this decision is not yet known.

Earlier in the day, Roy expressed displeasure over the functioning of the party and quit as an MLA. “I have submitted my resignation as an MLA to the assembly speaker. I am now a free bird,” he said.

He also slammed the TMC top brass for not supporting him when his residence was raided by the Enforcement Directorate and for the handling of the Sandeshkhali issue.

“I am really disappointed with the way the party is functioning. I am fed up with so many allegations of corruption levelled against the party and the government. Secondly, I do not support the way the Sandeshkhali issue was handled,” Roy told reporters.

He said that being a loyal soldier of the party for the last 25 years has not earned him his due.

Notably, Roy’s resignation has sparked discussions about the now former TMC leader’s future political plans. The impact of Tapas Roy’s next move on the political landscape remains to be seen.
