TMC excited ahead of Kolkata civic polls results; Section 144 imposed near counting hall

Counting of votes for Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections will begin at 8 am today after the opposition BJP alleged rigging and demanded re-polling in all 144 wards.

There were sporadic incidents of violence in the KMC elections on Sunday and a country-made bomb was hurled outside polling stations in the central part of Kolkata. State Election Commissioner Saurav Das said there are 195 arrests and 453 complaints, which are being resolved by the election body.

Leader of the Opposition and Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari has alleged that only 20% have voted in the KMC election.

The Election Commission has said that keeping in mind the sensitivity of elections, all the processes will be under CCTV surveillance.

Arrangements have been made like ward wise table, deputation of Assistant Municipal Returning Officer (AMRO) in 10 counting halls and all the procedures will be recorded.

Section 144 has been imposed within 200 meters of the counting hall. A three-tier security arrangement has been put in place by deploying rapid response teams, flying squads and drones to oversee the process. All counting agents have been asked not to carry their mobile phones in the hall. Around 1,000 state policemen and officers have been deployed in Kolkata.

Masks and sanitizers Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) will be made available at the counting centers amid rising cases of Kovid-19.

TMC is confident that it will get more than 132 seats this year. The BJP, however, was ahead of the TMC in 50 wards in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, as compared to 12 seats in this year’s assembly polls.

TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit Assam today where she will offer prayers at the Kamakhya temple.

The TMC returned to power in West Bengal for the third time in a row and won all the 16 assembly constituencies in the city in the April-May assembly elections. It has been in power in the city’s civic body since 2010 and is expected to dominate the KMC election this time as well, thanks to its massive victory in the state election and the recent UNESCO ‘Intangible Heritage’ tag for Kolkata’s Durga Puja. while riding.

In the last Kolkata Municipal Corporation election in 2015, the TMC had won 124 seats, while the BJP, Congress and Left managed to bag five, two and 13 seats. The vote share of BJP in the KMC region in the assembly elections was 29 per cent, while it was 38 per cent in the state.
