Thunderstorm likely to occur in Delhi, heat wave unlikely for a week: IMD

Delhi is likely to witness strong thunderstorms with a speed of 30 kmph on Wednesday and the maximum temperature is expected to be around 40 degrees Celsius. India Meteorological Department said.

An East-West trough is running from Haryana to Bangladesh at Lower Troposphere level. The Meteorological Department said that under its influence, light rain may occur in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.

Skymet Weather’s vice-president (climate change and meteorology) Mahesh Palawat said that parts of Delhi may receive thunderstorms on Wednesday, which will keep the temperature under control. He said that there is no possibility of heat wave in Delhi for a week.

Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds of 100 kmph lashed the national capital on Monday evening, uprooting trees, damaging property, disrupting internet and power supply and bringing traffic to a standstill.

This was the first storm with wind speed of 100 kmph or more since June 9, 2018, when Palam recorded wind speed of 104 kmph, a meteorological department official said. A moderate storm hit the city on 23 April.

Such powerful thunderstorms are more likely to develop suddenly in May and June due to high temperatures and high humidity. An IMD official said such developments cannot be predicted a day or two in advance. Palawat said high temperatures and high humidity create thunderstorm clouds that are capable of generating short, intense rain and thunderstorms.
