Three Sri Lanka players likely to be suspended for violating bio-bubble protocol

Three Sri Lankan cricketers who broke the bio-bubble protocol in Durham during the England tour are likely to be suspended for a period of 18 to 24 months.

A five-member committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge had recommended that Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka should be suspended from international cricket for two full years, while Niroshan Dickwella should be suspended for a period of 18 months. .

The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket is scheduled to meet today i.e. on 30 July to discuss the report prepared by the inquiry committee. The punishment for the three players will be finalized after the meeting. One thing is certain that the suspension will be handed over to all three, the time period may vary. However, it is not certain whether the board will give the harshest punishment suggested by the inquiry committee.

in conversation with espncricinfoMohan de Silva, secretary of the SLC, pointed out that the sentencing committee is very prestigious as it also includes a former Supreme Court judge, so the board has to take it seriously. De Silva further said that the players involved and the team management will also be consulted before a final decision on punishment is taken.

Considering past disciplinary incidents, harsher punishment has been suggested for Gunathilaka and Mendis than for Dickwella. While returning from a wedding last morning, Mendis ran his car over a pedestrian. The cricketer was not officially reprimanded by the board at that time.

Although the Sri Lanka Cricket Board has not officially ordered the suspension, the team’s coaching staff has indicated that they do not expect any of the three players to be available for the T20 World Cup this year.
