VARANASI: COVID-19 has returned to Varanasi and the surrounding area after a gap of months. Three persons, including a senior doctor from SSL Hospital of Banaras Hindu University, tested positive between Friday and Saturday, while four members of a family in Ghazipur have also been found positive. All the persons who tested positive have travel history.
All the samples have been sent to the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) of the Department of Anatomy, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU (IMS-BHU) for genome sequencing to find out whether these patients are carrying the omicron variant of COVID-19. Huh.
Taking note of the detection of new cases, Varanasi District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma has issued a strict directive to conduct their contact-tracing exercise properly.
With the lab test report coming on Saturday evening, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Rahul Singh said that a 33-year-old woman from Nader Cantonment area was found positive on Friday, while two persons from Samneghat were found positive in 6,355 lab tests. Report received on Saturday. All the persons tested positive have travel history and have returned from Mumbai, Guwahati and other places.

“The other two were found positive during pre-surgery diagnostic tests at BHU,” he said, adding, “Though all these cases have been found in BHU, teams have been deputed for their contact-tracing.”
Regarding the new cases coming up in BHU lab, Prof KK Gupta, Medical Superintendent of SSL Hospital said that out of seven cases of Kovid-19 positive, four are from Ghazipur. These four from the same family had recently returned from the US after which their RT-PCR test was done and they were all found positive.
All the positive samples were sent to the MRU laboratory headed by Professor Royana Singh for genome sequencing to confirm whether these individuals were infected with the new omicron variant of COVID-19. Prof Singh confirmed that the samples were being tested.
