A fire department official said the helicopter was “taking part in fighting a wildfire on Samos”, a mountainous island in the Aegean Sea.

The Coast Guard and fire service said three people were missing after a firefighting helicopter crashed into the sea near Greece on Wednesday.

“One person has been rescued and rescue operations are underway to find three other crew members,” a Coast Guard official told AFP.

A fire department official said the helicopter was “taking part in fighting a wildfire on Samos”, a mountainous island in the Aegean Sea.

The Coast Guard said its three patrol ships and two other boats were involved in the rescue operation.

The fire began around 2 p.m. (1100 GMT), prompting authorities to dispatch three helicopters and five planes as well as about 50 firefighters.

Strong winds hindered their efforts to contain the fire, as the temperature in Greece was around 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).
