The opposition party hit out at the BJP-RSS, saying those who try to rewrite history are thrown into the “dustbin of history”.

The Congress on Wednesday accused the government of distorting history and “covering up with a vendetta” after deleting some material from NCERT textbooks, including the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and the subsequent ban on the RSS for a while.

The opposition party criticized the BJP-RSS, saying those who try to rewrite history are thrown into the “dustbin of history”.

“Gandhiji’s death had a magical effect on the communal situation in the country”, “Gandhi’s quest for Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists” and “Organisations like the RSS were banned for some time” Class 12 Political Science are among the lessons missing from the NCERT textbook for the new academic session.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP and the RSS over the issue, saying no matter how hard they try, they cannot erase history.

“You can (make) changes in textbooks but you cannot change the history of the country. This is the attempt of BJP-RSS, no matter how much they try, they cannot erase the history.

Tagging a media report on the issue, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, “Whitewashing with a vengeance.” Tagging another report which claimed that even chapters related to Mughals and Dalit authors have been removed from textbooks, he said, “This reveals the true mindset of the ruling dispensation. After all, the RSS has not only Gandhi, but also strongly opposed Dr. Ambedkar. Asked about the issue at a press conference at the Congress headquarters here, Manish Tewari said rewriting history has been an “ongoing effort” with the RSS and the BJP.

“It is not the first time that this has happened. I remember this particular project was being unveiled in 1998-99 in the first and second NDA government. I would just like to say that you can twist history, But cannot erase.

Truth has a way of revealing itself. Tiwari said that history is witness to the fact that those who tried to rewrite history have been put in the ‘dustbin of history’.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also attacked the BJP over the issue, alleging that they wanted to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution by writing a “new history”.

He said, “But Prime Minister Modi, history is not changed, it is made by strong resolve.”

Union minister Shobha Karandlaje defended the decision to remove some references from textbooks, saying the Congress was India’s “biggest manipulator” of historical facts and the BJP was only correcting past wrongs.

“Facts that threatened @INCIndia and never made it into textbooks were Mughal barbarism, Emergency era, Genocide of Kashmir Pandits & Sikhs, Congress corruption. BJP is only correcting your wrongdoings.

When asked about the removal from the textbooks, NCERT chief Dinesh Saklani said, “The subject expert panel had recommended removal of texts on Gandhi. It was accepted only last year. Reasonable content list due to inspection It was not mentioned in the list. Any missing material in the list will be notified in a day or two.”
