This time Aadhaar will be required to register voter card and election amendment bill will also be passed in Rajya Sabha.

The Electoral Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed by the Rajya Sabha in the Parliament. Earlier this bill was passed in Lok Sabha. So this time after the President’s assent, it will become a law. Opposition parties have said that they will not contest the bypolls. The opposition to linking Aadhar card with Voter ID card was also opposed in Parliament. But in the end the bill was passed in both the rooms amid the uproar.

As per the proposal of this bill, the registering officer can ask for the Aadhar card number to register as a voter for proof of identity. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill in Lok Sabha on Monday. The bill was passed in the lower house of Parliament on the same day. And today this bill was approved in Rajya Sabha. The Law Minister claimed that this amendment would make it possible to draw crowds of fake votes. He also demanded transparency in the electoral process.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, have demanded that the amendment address the fundamental rights of citizens. According to the Union Law Minister, the allegations of the opposition are completely baseless. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju briefed party MPs about the need for the Electoral Laws (Amendment) Bill at the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday. The bill was later passed in the upper house of the Parliament.
