The tourists who made the video have now shared the full story of that moment with the media.

A massive fire broke out after General Bipin Rawat’s helicopter crashed in Coonoor.

The video of this unfortunate helicopter crash in the hilly forests of Coonoor was captured by a Coimbatore-based photographer Y Jo Paul alias Kutty, who was on a vacation with his friends and family in those forests at the time. In a conversation with a media house, 52-year-old Kutty told that at the time of the helicopter crash, he was shooting a photo with his friend Nasir and family on the railway track built on the mountains in Kateri.

During this time we heard a very loud sound of a helicopter, which was coming very fast towards us, Kutty said. In excitement, I made a video of him. After a few seconds the helicopter was lost in the mist and then a loud bang was heard and smoke was seen rising in the distance. Kutty said, Nasir asked if the helicopter crashed? We didn’t understand what had happened then and we left.

Local people tried to rescue after the accident, but all was in vain.

Kutty told that later when we reached Ooty, we got information about the whole accident. At that time we understood that the helicopter we had made the video of was the MI-17V5 of CDS. According to Kutty’s friend Nasir, we immediately informed the police about the video and handed over the video to them.

Helicopter crashed 7 minutes before landing
CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and several senior army officers left Sulur for Wellington helipad at 11.30 pm on Wednesday. The general was to deliver a lecture at the Defense Services Staff College, Coonoor. The helicopter was to land at Wellington Helipad at 12.15 am. But just 7 minutes before landing, the helicopter crashed.
