‘There’s some real quality there’: Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach praises Washington Sundar

Even though Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) lost their first match of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals (RR), all-rounder Washington Sundar’s performance with the bat has earned him praise. Praising Sundar, SRH head coach Tom Moody insisted that he will play a “critical role” for the team in the current season.

Sundar hit five fours and two sixes in his whirlwind innings of 40 runs in just 14 balls. During the post-match press conference, Moody revealed that his side had recognized Sundar as an outstanding all-rounder, so they were excited to bring him in the mega auction, which was held in Bengaluru last month.

Sundar, who was released by his former franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was acquired by SRH for Rs. 8.75 crores.

Moody believes that over time the left-hander is going to play a key role with both bat and ball. “With the balance of the side, he was positioned at number 8, but it is certainly not a permanent position for him,” he said.

Moody further said that the management has an open mind as to where the 22-year-old is going to end up with time. “We believe there is some real quality there,” he said.

Sundar has played a total of 43 matches in his IPL career, in which he has taken 27 wickets. He has also scored 257 runs.

Notably, his innings against RR is his best performance with the bat so far in the IPL.

Meanwhile, SRH, who lost to Royals by 61 runs, are preparing to take on new entrants Lucknow Super Giants in their upcoming clash.

SRH and LSG will face off at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, April 4.
