According to the price notification by state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs), petrol in Delhi remained unchanged at Rs 101.19 per liter, while diesel held steady at Rs 88.62 per litre. The price of a liter of petrol and diesel in Mumbai remained unchanged at Rs 107.26 and Rs 96.19, respectively. Significantly, both the auto fuels are the highest among the four major metros of the capital of Maharashtra.

In Kolkata, a similar trend was observed in both the major fuel rates. Retail pump petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged at Rs 101.62 and Rs 91.71 per liter in the West Bengal capital. Petrol on Saturday closed at the same price at Rs 98.96 per liter, while diesel also remained unchanged at Rs 93.26 per liter in Chennai. Currently, the capital of Tamil Nadu has the lowest fuel prices among the four metros.

Petrol and diesel prices were last revised on September 5, when petrol and diesel prices were cut by 15 paise per litre. However, despite two minor revisions this month, after revising rates 41 times since April this year, prices of both the major fuels remained at all-time highs across the country.

In the international market, crude oil prices fell on Friday but held above $75 a barrel as energy companies in the US Gulf of Mexico resumed production in the region after two hurricanes, Reuters reported. Brent crude futures fell 33 cents, bringing the final price to $75.34 a barrel. Similarly, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 64 cents to $71.97 a barrel, the report further said.

The prices of both the major fuels in the country differ due to excise duty and local taxation (VAT) levied by the central and state governments. State-owned OMCs revise rates of both auto fuels on a daily basis based on the average price of the benchmark fuel in the international market and foreign exchange rates. Any change in the rates of petrol, diesel is applicable every day at 6 am IST.
