‘The way he put pressure on our spinners’: Mitchell on ‘Mayank’s blueprint for counter Indian attack

New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell said on Sunday that he has learned from India Opener Mayank Agarwal will take on the home team’s spinners on the third day of the second Test here.

Mitchell (60 off 92 balls) shared a 73-run partnership with Henry Nicholls (36 batting) for the fourth wicket, which provided considerable resistance in New Zealand’s chase of an impossible 540 runs.

After the end of the day’s play, Mitchell said, ‘Create a blueprint for Mayank’s batting, the way he put pressure on our spinners.

“Still disappointed not to be out and kicking, but it’s good to see the partnership grow.”

Mitchell admitted that his team is definitely in a tough position in Tests.

“They (Indian bowlers) are constantly throwing things at you and you are trying to counter that. You have to keep trying to win small battles.

“We’re in a tough situation, but it was just trying to go out and do what we can. Obviously it’s very challenging.”

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took three quick wickets to bowl New Zealand out for 140 for five at stumps.

Talking about the Wankhede pitch, he said, “It’s quite a challenging surface, definitely the balls are turning with your name on it.

“It’s just about trying to put pressure on the bowlers. That’s the beauty of Test cricket.”
