The Unrecognised Urban Farmers of Delhi Are Caught in Conflict Over Land

The pressure of urbanization is visible on agriculture in Delhi. Confirms that the net area sown is coming down Economic Survey of Delhi (2021-22).

“Agriculture activity in Delhi is steadily declining due to rapid urbanization and increase in other economic activities of trade and industry. The number of rural villages is also declining, and the number has come down from 214 in 1981 to 112 in the 2011 census,” the Economic Survey said.

Paras Tyagi, associated with the Center for Youth Culture, Law and Environment (CYCLE), a Delhi-based non-profit, echoed the same sentiment. “Farmers have been exploited in Delhi villages, and land ownership has eroded over the years,” says Tyagi, adding that over 97% of farmers own less than 0.5 hectares.

No financial incentives or subsidy support is provided to the farmers in Delhi as you see in Punjab, Haryana etc. Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramveer Singh Bidhuri has also done something similar. Claim recently.

Amit Yadav, a farmer from Delhi’s Jhiljhuli village, also mentioned that there is no farm subsidy like subsidy on farm machinery, crop damage compensation, etc. provided by the government.

Paras Tyagi further claims that schemes on crop insurance, irrigation, dairy farming, horticulture and other agriculture related activities are not available to the farmers of Delhi.
