The team from Banaras Hindu University presented the idea of using phytochemicals to combat COVID-19. Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: A team of nine researchers led by Prof. Parimal Das, Coordinator, Center for Genetic Disorders (CGD), Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) participated in the Drug Discovery Hackathon-2020 (DDH 2020) Idea Submission Project Competition and presented their idea successfully.
pro dasso said that the project competition was about establishing an ‘open innovation model’ for silicon drug discovery SARS-CoV-2. The idea presented by the team at CGD, BHU was about the potential use of phytochemicals to combat COVID-19.
According to them, about 3,777 phytochemicals from 41 different medicinal plants were screened and then molecular docking was performed on 1,427 compounds selected to test their ability to interact with SARS-CoV-2 proteins. The team eventually concluded that two lead molecules that interact strongly with its active site are predicted to inhibit the activity of SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro and ORF8.
He said that these results can be used towards further development. drugs Carry forward for clinical use using appropriate formulation and after conducting safety tests. Considering the low toxicity, low side effects and bioavailability of these compounds, the use of these phytochemicals to specifically target viral proteins could be an excellent strategy towards our crusade against COVID pandemic pandemic.
The team included research scholars from CGD Prashant Ranjan, Chandra Devi, Neha Jha, Prashasti Yadav; Dr. Garima Jain, Dr. Chandana Basu, and Dr. Bhagyalakshmi Mohapatra (Associate Professor, Department of Zoology) and Dr. Vinay Singh (Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology) School of Biotechnology)
