The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, coincides with International Yoga Day; All you need to know

International Yoga Day 2022: The summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and for many people, it is a time to celebrate. The word Sankranti means ‘the sun stands still’. Meanwhile, the southern hemisphere sees opposite conditions during the summer solstice with longer nights and shorter days.

Being the longest day, the summer solstice is also the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and is of great importance in some parts of the world. This day also coincides with International Yoga Day. The concept of dedicating the longest day to Yoga was proposed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. Highlighting the benefits of practicing yoga, the PM introduced the idea during the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Due to the cultural importance in different parts of the world, it was decided to celebrate the summer solstice as Yoga Day. This is an auspicious time to honor the Sun. This idea was supported by 175 member countries after which the United Nations designated June 21 as International Yoga Day.

The day is celebrated across cultures and religions and encourages people to establish a connection with the rhythms of nature and its changing energies. Yoga is a great way to honor the summer solstice and cultivate a closeness with Mother Nature.

Keeping this spirit in mind, the theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga is ‘Yoga for Humanity’. The 8th edition of International Day of Yoga will also see an innovative program ‘Guardian Ring’, which will see the participation of enthusiasts starting from the East and moving towards the West along with the movement of the Sun.
