Warships INS Surat (Yard 12707) and INS Udayagiri (Yard 12652), built entirely on ‘Made in India’ concept, were launched at Mazagon Port in Mumbai. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has attended this program as the chief guest. After the launch of both, the Defense Minister said, “After the successful launch of ‘Udayagiri’ and ‘Surat’, there is no doubt that we will build ships not only for India but also for the world.” We will not only aim for ‘Make-in-India’ but also ‘Make-For-World’.

Earlier, it has been told by the Navy that on the day of the launch of these warships, the country will witness a historic event in the history of indigenous warship building. Both the warships have been designed by the Naval Design Directorate of the Navy.

Surat is the fourth warship of Project 15B

These warships are the next generation stealths of the Project 15B class, built at Mazagon Docks on the instructions of the Navy. INS Surat is the fourth frigate of Project 15B and a major makeover over Project 15A, the Kolkata-class destroyer frigate. INS Visakhapatnam, the first warship of Project 15B, joined the Indian Navy last year, i.e. in 2021. While the remaining two INS Marmugao and INS Imphal are undergoing trials.

According to the Indian Navy, Surat has a rich maritime shipbuilding history. From the 16th century to the 18th century, Surat was considered a leading city in shipbuilding. The ships built here were operational in the sea for 100-100 years. That is why it is named after ‘Surat’, the financial capital of Gujarat and the second largest commercial center in western India after Mumbai. Surat is built using block construction method at two different places.

The battleship Udayagiri is named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh. This is the third frigate of Project 17A. ‘Udayagiri’ is built with improved lethal weapons, sensors, technology and new platform management.

Seven ships under construction under P17A
Along with this, it was told by the Indian Navy that a total of seven ships are under construction under P17A, out of which four are being built at Mazagon Dock and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Kolkata. Let us tell you that both the warships under 15B and P17A have been designed and built in the country itself. Along with this, 75% of the equipment and systems have been used indigenously.
