‘The Set Roles Are Very Important’: Stephen Fleming Assures CSK Won’t Change Batting Order

Chennai Super Kings may have failed to chase down the target against Rajasthan Royals but head coach Stephen Fleming said he did not feel the need to change the batting order as he “does not mess with things that are going well”. ”

Set a target of 203, CSK slumped to 170 for six and lost by 32 runs, their third defeat in eight matches this IPL season.

Asked if CSK could have sent some of their big batsmen higher up the order, Fleming said: “The set roles are very important. (Ajinkya) Rahane has been very good for us at No.3. We don’t mess with things that are going well.

“It was only today when we came up against a team that reduced the pace of the ball. We couldn’t get any real momentum in the first six overs.

“Devon Conway, who has been in great form, could not get the runs. The pace of the innings was slow. We made mistakes when we tried to catch the game.”

Playing at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Rajasthan scored 64 for no loss in the powerplay and scored 202 for five while batting first, while Chennai managed just 42 for one in the first six overs.

Fleming admitted that they lost the match in the Powerplay, adding that the opposition were “excellent” with both bat and ball in the first six overs.

“First six overs, he was brilliant with bat and ball as well. “Just set them up for two innings,” Fleming said at the press-conference.

“We could have been better, but part of it is playing away from home – trying to find the right length to bowl, what kind of swing conditions we’re going to get. That’s part of the challenge of playing away.”

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 77 off 43 balls while Devdutt Padikkal (24 not out) and Dhruv Jurel (34 off 15) provided a late charge to push RR ahead.

CSK bowlers were a bit unlucky as several ends went for boundaries in the final over.

“This pitch was very different in appearance than the previous one. It played well. It started slowing down a bit towards the end, but Rajasthan played brilliantly in the home game. They came off the blocks really well. Jaiswal Brilliant innings to generate some momentum,” said the 50-year-old coach.

“We came back in the game pretty well. We were a bit unlucky. Just a couple of sixes in the last 3-4 overs probably got us 16-20 runs more than we thought. That’s just how the game goes. Those extra 20 runs Made it very difficult.”

Jurel said he has practiced for match situations where he can make an impact in a few balls.

“My mantra is to bat and the rest will take care of itself. I just played the position. I have batted for three-four hours every day. I make sure I am getting something out of my batting,” Jurel said.

“I try to keep the game simple. I know I can hit everywhere. Even if I play 6-7 balls, I know I can get big hits and Can completely change the game.

“It is a space which was given by the management so I practice like that. It doesn’t look like I am scoring runs or I have less balls, I have to score big runs, it doesn’t matter.
