The Rolling Stones resume long-awaited No Filter US tour and pay tribute to drummer Charlie Watts

The stones are rolling once again.

After a 16-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic death of drummer Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones resumed their No Filter Tour of Stadium show in the United States.

The legendary rockers took to the stage on Sunday at The Dome in the Center of America in St. Louis, Missouri, but not before paying tribute to Watts, who had been the band’s backbeat and backbeat since it officially returned in 1963.

The show began with an empty stage and only drum beats, as pictures of Watts flashed on a video board. After the second song, It’s Only Rock ‘No Roll (But I Like It), vocals from vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards and guitarist Ronnie Wood took the stage.

In a touching moment, Jagger and Richards held hands to thank fans for their support and love for Watts. At one point, Jagger admitted that it was emotional to see all the photos of Watts, who died on August 24 at the age of 80.

‘This is the first tour we’ve done without him,’ Jagger told the crowd, ‘We will miss Charlie dearly on and off stage.’

And while an official cause of death was not revealed, Watts had suffered a series of health problems in recent years, including a diagnosis of throat cancer in 2004.

The band continues to heal wounds by dedicating the song Tumbling Dice to Watts.

Longtime Rolling Stones collaborator Steve Jordan sat behind the drum kit for the gig. They were ready to fill the vats in advance as they were trying to recover from their ailments.

Jordan, 64, was a member of the television shows Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman in the 1970s and 80s.

Jordan played with Keith Richards’ side project, The Ex-Pensive Vinos, and continued to play and co-write songs until the mid-1980s. On several of Richards’ solo works.

In early August, The Stones announced that Jordan would fill in for Watso. On his 13-date US tour starting September 2021, which he is currently completing.

The tour was scheduled for 2020, before the coronavirus crisis shut down the tourism industry for the band.

Signs of the still-dangerous pandemic may be everywhere on show in Missouri, a state badly hit by the Delta version of the virus. Thousands of fans wore masks in accordance with St. Louis’ anti-virus protocol. The band itself also appeared in a public service announcement urging anyone with symptoms to stay home. A vaccination site was set up on the dome, with identical sites planned at each tour stop.

On Sunday’s show, the band performed Openers Street Fighting Man, Under My Thumb, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Woman, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and the two encores Gimme Shelter and (I Can’t Get) Satisfaction.

As the band went through the set list, Jagger hardly seemed like a 78-year-old man walking across the stage like a man much younger than his years. His vocals and guitar work from both Wood and Richards sounded as good as ever.

After St. Louis, the tour will include stops in Charlotte, North Carolina; Pittsburgh; Nashville, Tennessee; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Tampa, Florida; Dallas; Atlanta; Detroit; and expires on November 20 in Austin, Texas.

The band also added new dates in Los Angeles on October 14 and 17, and a concert in Las Vegas on November 6.
