Tiruppur: Veterinary University Training and Research Center (VUTRC) In Tiruppur The district is all set to undertake a project to reduce the calving gap Kangayam Cow
Generally, the breeding period of Kangayam cows is 16 months. Through NABARD funding, the institute’s doctors plan to offer hormone (progesterone) treatment for cattle, reducing the gap between two to three months.
VUTRC assistant professor Dr U Lakshmikantan told TOI: “The Kangayam Cattle The breed is known for its performance in farming. Due to shrinking of Korangadu land (traditional grazing land), many farmers were forced to graze their cattle in less space. With this difficulty, farmers face an additional burden when cow breeds have anestrus condition also known as recurrent failure to conceive.”
Since the maintenance of Kangayam cattle is now an expensive affair, many farmers are forced to sell the cows for a loss.
Through hormone treatment, the calving interval of 16 months can be reduced to 13 to 14 months.
“With this treatment, more calves will be obtained which ultimately increases production. Similarly, farmers can get at least two additional calves in the life cycle of cattle,” he explained.
