The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the successful bidders for the Women’s Premier League. The cumulative value of bids submitted was an astonishing Rs 4669.99 crore and Twitter users took to the online platform to express their views on the same.

Adani Pvt Ltd, five franchises to acquire WPL’s ownership rights, are Indian victories Play Private Limited, Royal Challengers Bangalore Private Limited, JSW GMR Private Limited and Capri Global Private Limited.

Adani’s bid of Rs 1289 crore got them the rights for the Ahmedabad team, while IndianWin Sports got the rights for Mumbai for Rs 912.99 crore. RCB owner Royal Challengers Sports acquired the rights of the Bengaluru-based team for ₹901 crore, while JSW Group acquired the rights of the Delhi-based franchise. 757 crore bid by Capri Global got them a place in the inaugural edition of WPL along with the Lucknow unit.

Back in the year 2008, when the BCCI announced the formation of the men’s IPL, eight bidders put in a total bid of Rs 2894 crore in the tournament and 15 years later, five bidders invested an astonishing amount of Rs 4669 crore. In a new endeavor.

Expressing his happiness regarding the formation of the league, a fan tweeted “amazing to see #wpl Finally a product with such huge investment and interest in it bears fruit. There is a huge market for women’s cricket and it will only continue to grow. So excited!”

A fan took note of the absence of historic IPL teams like Chennai and Kolkata in the WPL and termed it as a surprise.

Earlier Viacom18 had bought the media rights to broadcast WPL for a total of Rs 951 crore, which is approximately Rs 7.09 crore per game for the upcoming five years.
