New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its weekend forecast has predicted that more than 20 states and union territories are likely to receive heavy rains in the next 2 days. The Meteorological Department has issued a very heavy rain alert for Chhattisgarh for the next two days, while similar warnings have been issued for Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The IMD in its weather bulletin said, “Very widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms/lightning over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan and isolated rainfall activity over Uttar Pradesh Likely with increase in rain activity during next 3 days.

The IMD said that the Monsoon Trough has shifted to South direction and has intensified and is likely to move northwards from July 17.

IMD rain forecast:

The IMD said on Saturday that scattered/moderate rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 3 days.

Thunderstorm warning has been issued for today at isolated places over MP, Maharashtra (Vidarbha), Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh (Coastal), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Chhattisgarh for the second day on Sunday.

There is a possibility of rain in many states like Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra (Vidarbha), Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Goa, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala . Rain in some parts of Delhi

The IMD said that many parts of the national capital received rain on Sunday morning, bringing down the mercury to 24.3 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average temperature. Several areas of the national capital such as Shahdara, Akshardham, Mayur Vihar, ITO, Saket and adjoining India Gate received rain. The Met Office has forecast that the day will be cloudy with very light rain and drizzle at one or two places and the maximum temperature is likely to be 37 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc in Rajasthan

Monsoon rains continued in Rajasthan, where several areas, including the state capital, recorded moderate rains on Saturday. The spell of rain is likely to continue over the dry state for the next few days. Thunderstorms will continue at most places in Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, Bharatpur and Ajmer divisions for the next three-four days.

Heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the plains and hills of Himachal Pradesh for the next four days. Shimla Meteorological Center Director Surendra Paul said a yellow weather warning has been issued for heavy rain, lightning and thunderstorms from July 17 to 19, while an orange alert has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms on July 20.

Storm brewing off Gujarat coast

A storm is brewing in the Arabian Sea 70 km off the Gujarat coast at Okha, packing wind speeds of more than 50 kmph and moving towards Oman, the Met Office said on Sunday. “It is very likely to move west-northwestwards towards Oman coast across northwest Arabian Sea during next 48 hours,” said a national bulletin issued by the Met Office on Sunday morning. The Met Office has predicted windy weather with wind speed of 55 kmph and high speed of 65 kmph along and off Gujarat coast till Sunday evening.

Telangana floods

Telangana received heavy rains this week for nearly seven days till Friday, flooding low-lying areas and causing damage to agricultural crops and others. Till last Wednesday, more than 10 people died in various rain-related incidents like wall collapse and electrocution. The steep rise in the water level in the Godavari river in Telangana’s Bhadrachalam town started receding on Saturday, though it was still well above the danger mark, forcing most of the flood-affected people to stay in relief camps.
