The state education minister captioned the post, “Chal Rahi Reels Films.”

The poster alludes to an incident in 2019 when supporters of a rally were attacked by a large number of people at Edappal in Kerala’s Malappuram district. The Sabarimala Karma Samiti had called for a strike from dawn to dusk in the state to protest against the entry of young women into the Sabarimala temple.

On Monday, PK Firoz, general secretary of the Muslim Youth League, also objected to the film, calling it a propaganda film backed by the “Sangh Parivar”. He also wrote on Facebook that a case should be registered against director Sudipto Sen.

He claimed in his post that the Kerala story portrays Muslims seeking to establish an Islamic state in Kerala. Additionally, he stated that the film depicts Hindu women being lured to convert to Islam through love jihad by Muslim men and subsequently inducted into terrorism. He further said that the Supreme Court had also rejected the concept of Love Jihad.

Amidst the controversy, director Sudipto Sen told India Today that he made the film after months of research. “No producer wanted to back the film. My perspective changed, I was very impressed after talking to the victims.”

The Kerala Story, written and directed by Sudipto Sen, is characterized as “unknowingly” the events behind the “nearly 32,000 women” who are allegedly missing in the southern state. The film claims that they converted, became radicalized and were deployed on terror missions in India and the world. The film is all set to hit the theaters on 5 May.
