GUWAHATI: The state health department’s search for those who have not yet received the first dose is becoming a tedious exercise as thousands of those in the projected 18-plus targeted beneficiary list have already died.
State Health Minister on Saturday Keshab Mahanta Reviewed the vaccination scenario in Nagaon, one of the most densely populated districts of the state. Estimated 25,000-30,000 target beneficiaries in Nagaon Sources with knowledge of a meeting said that when a desperate search operation was launched to reach them, they were found killed alone.
“After conflicts in the estimated number of citizens over 18, we were finally following up with this year’s voter list. But here too, a significant population had died. Considering the various discrepancies in the beneficiary list, We have written to the district to send us practical lists,” Munindra Nath, state nodal officer for COVID vaccination pt, told TOI.
The plan was to vaccinate all eligible citizens in the state by Durga Puja which ends on Friday. But after the latest review meetings, even the health department is confused as to the exact number of people who have not yet been vaccinated for the first dose.
Initially, the state government thought that the estimated 18 plus population eligible for vaccination in the state was 2.31 crore. However, health department officials said that the Center revised it to 2.36 crore. But when the latest voter lists for the 2021 assembly elections were considered, the figure turned out to be 2.33 crore. At the micro level, health officials have been instructed to check the beneficiary list polling station wise to find out the actual number of people who have not been fully vaccinated. The government is not forcing pregnant women and lactating mothers to take the vaccine. Those who cannot visit the immunization centers due to old age will be vaccinated at the doorstep.
“Many natives of one district have received the vaccine in another district, either in the state or outside. Many laborers have gone to other states for work as the Covid restrictions have been eased. They could not be traced to the native district,” Ngetty said. According to the state health department data, about 39 lakh people in the state are still deprived of the first dose. However, if districts submit revised lists, Ngeti said the actual number of unvaccinated beneficiaries could actually be ascertained. “If we keep on including pregnant, lactating women or laborers leaving the state, Assam We can never achieve the 100% vaccination target.”
According to the CoWIN portal, around 1.94 crore (1,94,45,350) people in Assam have received the first dose, while around 63.42 lakh (63,42,326) have received the second dose. hit until Saturday evening. The vaccination drive has gained momentum with over 2.21 lakh doses given on Saturday.
“If the revised target of total beneficiaries falls from 2.10 to 2.15 crore, which appears to be the reality, then the remaining illiterate population can be given the first dose within 10 days. Assam is achieving the 100% vaccination target with the first. dose in October,” said a health department official.
