In place of the word ‘intoxicating drink’, the word ‘narcotic substance, psychotropic substance’ has been used. There is still a gray area as ‘intoxicating’ can also include alcohol. Does Incorporating Rahul’s Suggestion Mean His Seal On Congress’ Post-India Jodo Yatra?

Congress is planning to say cheers to the changing times.

One of the issues being discussed and changes that will be seen is one of the seven oaths to be taken by the new members.

According to Clause V(b)(c), anyone who wants to become a member of the party must ensure that he “abstains from intoxicating drinks and intoxicants”. But now its scope has been extended. In place of the word ‘alcoholic’, the word ‘narcotic and psychotropic substance’ has been used. There is still a gray area, as the word ‘alcoholic’ has been specifically dropped, but ‘addictive’ can also include alcohol.

But Rahul Gandhi were keen to remove the word ‘alcohol’, as they felt it would not be realistic as many members drink and membership could then be questioned.

This is Congress’ fight on drugs as it will be one of the prerequisites for any new member. This means that new members will either have to undergo a dope test or get a clean chit.

Cause

There are two reasons for this.

One, Rahul Gandhi, ever since he joined active politics in 2014 and started attending party meetings, has maintained that the party should be realistic and move with the times. He acknowledged the fact that most members drink and that it would be impractical to use this as a reason to prevent the admission of new members.

Second, the Congress wants to project itself as a party that feels for the youth and is in sync with the drugs affecting the youth, especially the unemployed.

Other oaths taken by the new members include secularism by wearing Khadi.

Another way of looking at it – does the inclusion of Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion mean that the Congress post-Bharat Jodo Yatra will see his stamp?
