After weeks of speculation and rumours, The Crown creator Peter Morgan has officially confirmed the inclusion of imaginary Diana.

Following the conclusion of the fifth season of The Crown, dedicated fans of the Netflix series are on the edge of their seats, awaiting the release of the sixth and final season, promising a deep dive into the Royal Family’s highs and lows. As anticipation builds for the grand finale, the British tabloid The Daily Mail has sparked conversations by sharing details about a scene from the upcoming season. This particular scene involves the “ghost” of Princess Diana, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, interacting with Prince Charles, played by Dominic West and ageing Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth. After weeks of speculation and rumours, the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, has officially confirmed the inclusion of imaginary Diana.

Explaining how she’ll appear in the sixth season, Peter told Variety, “I never imagined it as Diana’s ‘”ghost”’ in the traditional sense. It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively.”

While details of The Crown Season 6 remain a secret, fortunate few got a chance to have a glimpse of the final episodes. As per Daily Mail, the scene involves Charles grieving over Diana’s body in a Paris hospital morgue. Elizabeth Debicki’s character even expresses her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for how you were in the hospital. So raw, broken and handsome. I’ll take that with me.” A Netflix source later clarified that Debicki’s appearance will be like the “visualizations of innermost thoughts,” rather than a supernatural occurrence.

While Buckingham Palace has chosen to maintain silence, few close with the members of the Royal Family indicate that the upcoming season will be ‘considered in poor taste,’ especially since it delves into what they consider “deeply painful memories” of the family and transforming them into sensation.

The Crown Season 6 is set to be released in two parts. The first part, streaming from November 16, will cover events up to Princess Diana’s funeral. The second instalment, streaming from December 14, will bring the story to an end with Charles’ wedding with Camilla Parker Bowles. This final season will explore the life of the Royal Family following the tragic death of the princess, who lost her life in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.
