The coldest night of the season recorded in Srinagar; Temperature remained below zero in Pahalgam, Kupwara

Srinagar city recorded the coldest night of the season on Friday as the mercury was moving southwards, officials said on Friday. Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. It was also recorded as the coldest place in Kashmir.

He said that Kupwara in north Kashmir also recorded a low of minus 0.9 degree Celsius. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 0.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, the lowest temperature of the season, officials said.

Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, recorded a temperature of 0.0 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.

Gulmarg resort in Baramulla district recorded a minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius.

The Kashmir Valley is slipping into cold conditions long before the onset of extremely harsh weather. The peak season usually starts during the third week of December.

Chillai Kalan, a 40-day period of severe winter in Kashmir, begins on December 21 every year.
