Lata Mangeshkar’s sister Usha Mangeshkar went to Varanasi to immerse her ashes in the Ganges.
Sister Usha along with other members of the Mangeshkar family went to Varanasi with a urn containing ashes and immersed them in the Ganges.
The ashes of famous singer Lata Mangeshkar were immersed in the Ganges river in Varanasi by her family members. Bharat Ratna breathed his last on 6 February at a hospital in Mumbai.
Sister Usha Mangeshkar along with other family members had reached Varanasi with a urn containing ashes. He took a boat at Khidkiya Ghat, from where he went to Ahilyabai Ghat. After performing Vedic rituals at the ghat under the guidance of priest Shrikant Pathak, the ashes were immersed in the middle of the Ganges.
His fans present at the ghat paid tribute to the departed soul. The family returned to Mumbai after offering prayers at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The veteran singer breathed his last at the age of 92 after which he was cremated at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
According to reports, Lata’s family had kept her ashes in three different utensils as per the tradition. Last month his ashes were immersed in Ramkund. His family performed the last rites on the banks of the Godavari in Nashik and immersed his ashes in the river. Lata Mangeshkar’s nephew Adinath Mangeshkar and sister Usha Mangeshkar were also present in the ceremony.
After immersion in Ramkund, news came that Lata’s ashes would also be taken to Kashi and Haridwar. Of the three vessels, one will be taken to Kashi where the ashes will be immersed in the Ganges while the other vessel will be taken to Haridwar for immersion.
On January 8, Lata Mangeshkar was taken to the intensive care unit after testing positive for the virus and was even treated for pneumonia. However, he died on 6 February at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. His last rites were performed with full state honors at Shivaji Park in Mumbai and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended it.
