The Apple Watch may get a built-in camera in the future

The Apple Watch is the most popular smartwatch in the world, and continues to sell in the millions. But the company isn’t ready to rest on its laurels, and according to a new report, Apple may be adding a camera to its popular Watch in the near future. That’s right, according to a patent filed by the Cupertino-based giant, the Apple Watch could have a built-in camera integrated into the digital crown.

The patent filing was made a few years ago, which has excited people who think this year’s Apple Watch Series 8 may be the first to feature. But generally, patent filing is done so that no one else is able to claim patent for the technology at a later stage.

Bringing a camera to the Apple Watch is an interesting move, especially for a company like Apple. Putting it on the Digital Crown opens up the value of the component, we’re not sure how the company intends to use having a sensor in that case.

The patent filing teases the camera on the right side of the Apple Watch, which is capable of capturing the view around it. Therefore, it is important that you wear the Apple Watch in the left hand, otherwise the camera will be facing you. In addition, Apple will have to change the watchOS platform to support the hardware component on the device.

Apple filing for this patent does not mean that the technology will be offered on a product to consumers in the near future.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to be announced later this year along with the new iPhone 14 series. Before that, we’ll get a chance to hear about the new features on WatchOS at the WWDC 2022 keynote, which is scheduled for June 6th and will once again be an online affair.
