The Apple TV app on Android TV won’t let you rent or buy movies

Android TV users with Apple TV on the big screen are no longer able to buy or rent movies. Details from Apple are unclear, but reports say that Apple TV’s functionality is limited to any television that comes with the Android TV platform out of the box.

This means that TVs from many brands such as OnePlus, Mi, Vu and Realme are unable to buy content from the Apple TV app if they want to watch.

Instead, the user is being asked to go to other platforms or buy it via iPad, Apple TV or iPhone. The purchase option is still available for TVs from LG, Samsung and other brands that do not use Android TV as their native TV operating system.

Reports say that the Apple TV app on Android TV no longer shows you a ‘Buy’ option in front of any content available on the platform. Thankfully, the content you’ve already fetched or downloaded from Apple TV is available, so you can continue watching shows/movies that are in the TV’s memory.

And just because the buy option has been removed, doesn’t bother you watching the show. The catalog of content on Apple TV remains the same as for Android TV. So, if you are not buying content from Apple TV for the big screen, then this news will hardly matter in your life.

Apple and Google have a long history of fighting over in-app fees and commission structures. It’s possible that Apple has a substantial position with Google and has decided that any content purchased through Android TV does not hurt its earnings. And suggesting people buy content from Apple-focused devices is a clear indication of what the Cupertino-based giant means to make this decision.

Android TV is very popular in markets like India, where smart TV sales have outpaced traditional TV buyers. For such people, losing the option to buy content from Apple TV is hardly a deal-breaker.
